A commemorative stone was unveiled in Springhead by the Mayor of Oldham and family of Sergeant Thomas Steele Victoria Cross.
Oldham Interfaith officer Fazal Rahim read a letter written in the Great War by an Oldham soldier to the Oldham Evening Chronicle. Mr Shashi Mohandas from Oldham Indian Association read a poem by Rabinar Tagore.
